It’s almost here — moving day is just around the corner! Your belongings are packed, and the truck is booked. You are probably very excited to finally be starting a chapter. But are you prepared for the arrival of the house-moving company? What will actually happen when their team arrives?
Even though you’ve hired a professional house-moving company to handle the heavy lifting, you still need to know what (and what not) to do. It’s the small things that can derail the day if you’re not ready.
Clear the space of kids and pets
Moving day will be busy and loud. Add small children or curious pets into the mix, and it will get doubly harder to keep things safe.
Movers need to navigate tight corners with bulky furniture and avoid tripping hazards, so if possible, make arrangements ahead of time to keep kids and animals away from the moving zone.
Stick around
Someone — you or someone you trust — needs to be present. While your house moving company has the experience to handle things quickly, they may still need to ask you questions about where you want to place large appliances, or even how to access certain service entrances of your building or gated storage areas. You want to be there to answer them right away so as not to waste time.
Keep valuables and essentials with you
It’s always a good idea to carry essentials such as medication, cash, phones/electronics, and IDs with you because it’s easy to lose track of things when boxes start piling up. Don’t let them get buried or tossed into the wrong container. Is something irreplaceable, or do you think you might need it immediately when you reach your new home? Then keep it in your own vehicle or bag.
Empty your drawers before moving day
Even sturdy furniture like dressers and desks shouldn’t be moved with items inside, as full drawers make them heavier and harder to handle safely. So take everything out and pack those items into clearly labelled boxes. This will make your furniture easier to carry and far less likely to tip or break during the move. It also prevents smaller items like pens or jewellery from sliding around and causing damage from the inside.
Reserve elevators and parking early
If you’re moving to or from a building with elevators, be sure to check well ahead of time if you need to book one for moving day. Some buildings require prior notice and can only accommodate moves at specific hours.
It’s also a good idea to secure a spot for the moving truck so that the crew can park close to the entrance without blocking traffic or dragging furniture across long distances. All these seemingly little things can help your house-moving company work so much faster, since they won’t be stuck waiting for access.
Let your movers take the lead
We understand that it’s tempting to jump in and help when you see your movers carrying load after load. But unless they ask for a hand, it’s better to give them space. House moving companies have developed their own loading systems to make the most of truck space and minimise damage in transit. If you try moving boxes without coordinating with the team, you might throw off that system and create more work for them later. It’s best to stay nearby for questions while giving your house-moving company room to do their job.
